Muxtape (Not A Typo)

Here’s my Muxtape. It’s a website that allows you to upload a playlist of 12 songs for you to share with other people. I’ve no idea what legal loophole it runs through. Perhaps it’s similar to how radio stations work. I guess that’s why they only allow you to upload one song per artist.

It’s pretty genius. I’ve already found a bunch of new music to investigate through viewing some of my friends’ Muxtapes. The website itself seems solidly built too. Some kind of swanky Web 2.0 CSS+HTML with JavaScript handling some embedded Flash. I hope they integrate some Last.fm functionality. Check out my playlist. It’s a collection of some of the more obscure stuff I listen to, explaining the remixes and cover. I didn’t want to upload what people already have.

Update: RIAA‘d :(

It’s not ruinning through any legal loophole, it’s trying to grow quickly enough so that when the lawyers come calling they’ll have some leverage.

Sonific.com recently announced it was closing its doors because it couldn’t get any attention from the major record lables. Previously they’d complained about sites like imeem.com which has built its leading position in web2.0 music on a service which was initially of dubious legality. Muxtape is in many ways a clone of imeem, albeit with different UI, limits on numbers of tracks and none of the social features that imeem has.
