Web Two-ing Your Internet

I’ve always been apprehensive in adopting new web tools until they’ve been widely accepted by other people. Maybe it puts me at the back-end of a moving technology, but I hate changing my routine. However, I did a bit of an overhaul this weekend. I finally installed delicious to manage my bookmarks across multiple devices. Very nifty tool, though the app has a few restrictions, like having to visit their website to delete or move bookmarks.

I also started making use of RSS by subscribing a bunch of feeds on Google Reader. Since the feeds refresh every few minutes, any tab with Reader open will display how many new entries you’ve not read. Good for keeping track of new reading material. Finally, as can be seen by my sidebar widget, I signed up to FriendFeed. This compiles all of your own RSS feeds on social websites, and essentially makes a mini-blog of your Internet activity. Dead useful for lazy bloggers like myself.

ISPs Can’t Handle BBC iPlayer, Whine

Internet Service Providers have complained to the BBC about the incurred costs of letting millions of Britizens freely view programmes online. Apparently it’s costing them a lot of bandwidth. This shouldn’t be a problem, considering all the “features” you get when you sign up to an ISP. Lots of downloadable audio and video content, they say.

But no, their infrastructure sucks, and they can’t handle a mainstream Web 2.0 technology. They’re even lying through their teeth about it. “There seems to be a lack of understanding about how networks are built. Either we are not explaining it properly or it is falling on deaf ears,” said ISP. Perhaps they should stop overcharging users for second rate connections and fulfill their promises. In other news, water companies demand money from makers of large cups.

Muxtape (Not A Typo)

Here’s my Muxtape. It’s a website that allows you to upload a playlist of 12 songs for you to share with other people. I’ve no idea what legal loophole it runs through. Perhaps it’s similar to how radio stations work. I guess that’s why they only allow you to upload one song per artist.

It’s pretty genius. I’ve already found a bunch of new music to investigate through viewing some of my friends’ Muxtapes. The website itself seems solidly built too. Some kind of swanky Web 2.0 CSS+HTML with JavaScript handling some embedded Flash. I hope they integrate some Last.fm functionality. Check out my playlist. It’s a collection of some of the more obscure stuff I listen to, explaining the remixes and cover. I didn’t want to upload what people already have.

Hello YouTubes

I’m not sure if this guy is an actor, part of a marketing ploy, or whether it’s his own real music, but Ronald Jenkees‘ self titled album has been one of the very few I’ve bought recently. He’s an independent artist who seems to focus on the Piano but mixes all of his “beats” with some high-end production software.

His music seems reminiscent of video game music, like from Sonic and Deus Ex, but it’s nicely done nonetheless. Ambient on certain tracks but heavy on others. Glad I purchased his album, and I’ve been previewing his upcoming stuff on his YouTube. Definitely check him out.

Another Futile Attempt!

So this is another futile attempt to create some form of blog, diary, page of discussion. I imagine it’ll die out after about two entries. It’s most likely down to my curiosity over what the new WordPress offers. I watched a vlog of it, showing some technical features. Looked rather nifty. From the publishing GUI I’m messing around with at the moment it appears to be something I one day hope to build. I hate programming, so it’s likely going to remain a hope. Now watch my ineptitude at blogging!
